The ATP
clay swing enters its final week of competition before the French Open with the
ATP 250 Lyon Open and Geneva Open. Players like Casper Ruud, Taylor Fritz, and
Ben Shelton will take advantage of the week after the Rome Open to arrive in
competitive form for the second Grand Slam of the year.
Djokovic set for late outing in Geneva
Nicolas Jarry was set to defend his Geneva crown, but decided to withdraw after reaching the final in Rome. But Novak Djokovic due to no semblance of form will make a rare outing in an ATP 250 tournament alongside Casper Ruud and the
top American players of the moment Fritz, Shelton, and Paul, all closely ranked
and vying for the American No. 1 spot.
The
appearance of Andy Murray is also surprising, courtesy of a wildcard. The
3-times Grand Slam champion will play the Challenger Bourdeaux Open the week
before and then Geneva for his first ATP-level tournament, seeking to find form
before Roland Garros, where he already has a secured spot.
Ruud will be the only top-10 player at the Geneva Open. The Norwegian has a 13-4 record on clay in 2024 and claimed the title at the Barcelona Open few weeks ago.
Lyon seeks a new champion
The ATP 250
Lyon Open will have its 7th edition without any former champions in the draw.
The 2023 title winner Arthur Fils opted to rest the week before the French
Open, making his compatriot Ugo Humbert the top candidate for the title, the
only top-15 player in the draw.
Nevertheless,
a competitive field emerges with stars like Aleksander Bublik, Felix
Auger-Aliassime, and Frances Tiafoe in the draw. The seeded players also
include South Americans Francisco Cerundolo (runner-up in 2023), Tomas
Etcheverry, Mariano Navone, and Alejandro Tabilo.
