Danielle Collins is through to the third round of the 2024 Rome Open where she will play Elisabetta Cocciaretto or Caroline Garcia as she faced a retirement win in her opener against Anna Blinkova. But she also showed her sportsmanlike side amid a horror injury for the latter,
Collins won the first set 6-4 and was starting the second. But 19 minutes in to the first game disaster struck as Blinkova went over on her ankle mid point and she was forced to retire from the contest in heartbreaking scenes.
She will now likely face a race against time or be out of Roland Garros in a few weeks. While Collins who only saw her recent streak which lasted since Indian Wells quashed by Aryna Sabalenka last week moves on. Selfishly she now has a pretty easy task to reach the Quarter-Finals compared to other top names.
She rushed to help Blinkova though in this situation with Collins bringing over towels and water for her opponent and helping in whatever way she could before she was then taken off the court. Best wishes go to Blinkova as Collins moved on. She was in one of the first matches of the day to open her account and spent little time actually on the court.
In her last season, she has already won a clay court title in Charleston and amid her defeat to Sabalenka last week showed some semblance of rust as she was taken to the limit by both Olga Danilovic and Jaqueline Cristian before falling to the Belarusian. But she will hope for better this week and after an early bye will now play in the third round already.
