Danielle Collins has joked that her head is preoccupied with the Barbie movie after her win against
Elina Svitolina at the National Bank
Canadian Open (Omnium Banque Nationale) in Montreal.
Former world No. 7 Collins achieved her first victory against a top-30-ranked player this year in her opening round of the WTA 1000 event, defeating world No. 27 Svitolina in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.
This dominant display from the American came as somewhat of a surprise due to the fact that Collins had only just scraped through qualifying after a final-round three-set win against Emina Bektas 7-5 6-7(10) 7-5.
Meanwhile, Svitolina has had a largely successful season after returning from maternity leave in March. Most notably, the Ukrainian defeated world No. 1 Iga Swiatek to reach the semi-finals at this year's Wimbledon. However, it was Collins that emerged as the clear victor in Montreal, and it was also quite evident that the current world No. 48 couldn't quite wrap her head around it.
Collins says her head is still in Barbie land
Instead, the 29-year-old seemed preoccupied with the recently released Barbie movie after having gone to see the film the night before her match.
During the on-court interview after her win, Collins was asked if she had any technique to focus on herself for the next round, but she quickly made it clear that her head was somewhere else at that particular time.
"I don't know, my head has been taken for a spin. We went to the Barbie movie last night. So that’s where my head is at. I’ve got the songs stuck in my head," she joked.
The Barbie movie was released at the end of last month and features a star-studded cast headed up by Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling. The film also has a successful soundtrack full of some of the biggest names in music today, with the main song "Dance the Night", performed by Dua Lipa, reaching the top 5 in the charts across several countries.
Clearly, these songs have now helped Collins to progress to the second round in Canada, where she will face eighth seed Maria Sakkari.
