British tennis player Francesca Jones had to be taken off the court mid match in a wheelchair after collapsing at Copa Colsanitas Bogota on Tuesday.
In footage (below) posted to social media, the 24-year-old staggered after failing to return a serve facing Julia Riera in the clay court opener. This was during the third set in a Last 32 tie between the pair. She was unable to return to play.
She fell to the floor and was removed from the court in a wheelchair. “Due to a physical issue, Francesca Jones has withdrawn from her match against Julia Riera at 6-2 5-7 5-3 in favor of the Argentinian,” the Colsanitas Cup’s official X account penned.
“We wish the British tennis player a speedy recovery.”
Jones was only two points from defeat anyway but it was likely exhaustion with the Brit winning an eighth career title in Brazil over the weekend so the altitude change and heat likely played its part. The Brit who plays with a rare genetic condition called Ectrodactyly Ectodermal Dysplasia plays with one finger missing on each hand.
In addition to only having seven toes. But she also suffers from bouts of severe cramp which have often blighted her. It was the 19th time that she has retired during a match and the second time this year. Riera next faces American, Iva Jovic.
Jovic at the age of 17 has emerged under the radar as one of the most exciting talents currently about to breakout. She breezed through Alycia Parks to set up a tie with Riera in Bogota in a tournament which doesn't have the most high quality field.
So it will be a big chance for her this week to make strides that she is already making. Most of the top names this week have opted for rest or Charleston with Bogota staging the other tournament. Many will then head to Billie Jean King Cup duty followed by Stuttgart, Rouen or assorted clay court tournaments.
