Marketa
Vondrousova had an incredible welcome upon returning to her hometown, Sokolov,
after winning
Wimbledon.
The great
triumph at SW19 made history as
Marketa Vondrousova became the first unseeded
player to win the Wimbledon main draw title. She defeated
Ons Jabeur in the
final with a score of 6-4, 6-4, securing her first Grand Slam trophy.
Prior to
this victory, Vondrousova had already reached the final of the 2019 French
Open, where she lost to Ashleigh Barty. With this Wimbledon win, she becomes
the third Czech female tennis player to claim the title at the All England
Club, following in the footsteps of Jana Novotna in 1998 and
Petra Kvitova in
2011 and 2014. Among the men, Jan Kodes was the only Czech player to achieve
this feat in 1973.
Having
reached her career-best ranking of world No. 10 this week, Vondrousova returned
to her hometown of Sokolov in the Czech Republic, where she was warmly welcomed
by hundreds of fans who came to celebrate the 24-year-old tennis star. She
expressed her gratitude to her fellow countrymen for their support and
celebration.
“Unreal,
thank you,” she wrote on her social media.
Vondrousova's
arrival was showcased on Instagram by the official account of the Czech Olympic
team.
“Spectacular
return of the champion! 👑 Hometown Sokolov welcomed the
Wimbledon winner,”
On her way
to glory at Wimbledon, Vondrousova defeated Peyton Stearns, Veronika
Kudermetova, Donna Vekic, Marie Bouzkova, Jessica Pegula, Elina Svitolina, and
Ons Jabeur. The Czech player mentioned in the post-tournament press conference
about the challenging draw she faced.
“I saw the
draw, it wasn't so easy. I had Veronika, then I had Donna. They played amazing
on grass the tournaments before. I was like, let's try. I beat them in two
sets. I was like, ‘Okay, maybe something can happen here.’ I think I was just
open-minded. You just have to believe in yourself,” Vondrousova said.
