Another WTA 1000 event has come and gone. The Rome Open was yet another pivotal event in shaping up the WTA Race rankings as the best players in the world tussle and struggle for a slot in the top eight for the WTA Finals in Riyadh.
The big winners were champion Elina Svitolina and finalist Coco Gauff. The points earned from the tournament have bolstered their positions at the top and somewhat relieved pressure from their shoulders. That cannot be said for other top players who still have work to do as the season trudges on to the French Open.

Svitolina into top three as Gauff makes moves

The top two remain the same, but the gap has extended by a couple hundred points. Both Elena Rybakina and Aryna Sabalenka will not be satisfied by how these recent WTA 1000 tournaments have gone, but would have long ago set their sights on a very deep run at Roland Garros. Rybakina leads the field with the 2025 WTA Finals finalists looking very good to return.
So is Svitolina. The champion rises two positions to third after another incredible week. She has been on fire in 2026, deservingly in the run-in to compete for a second WTA Finals crown. Jessica Pegula and Madrid Open finalist Mirra Andreeva all move down just a single place.
In that final, Svitolina defeated a topsy turvey Gauff. She struggled and battled her way through, but overall it was another impressive week which sees her climb two spots into sixth, relieving some pressure at this moment in time after a second WTA 1000 final in 2026.
Karolina Muchova's second round exit to Anastasia Potapova was the first player outside the top 5 to defeat her. She has never competed in the showpiece event before, qualifying in 2023 when she reached the final of Roland Garros but an injury-ravaged career has held her back. From experienced to youth: Victoria Mboko was unable to gain any points in Rome due to withdrawing late on, but stays in the top eight.

Swiatek still has work to do

Madrid Open champion Marta Kostyuk also did not turn up, but remains in a very respectable ninth. A semi-final for Iga Swiatek is good enough for just 10th. Just under 400 points away from the cut-off, there is still a lot of time for the Pole to change her fortunes around and get herself into a sixth consecutive WTA Finals. She will need to continue putting in improved performances and avoid so many early exits.
One of the stories from the Rome Open was Sorana Cirstea's insane run. She dumped out the world number one enroute to the semi-final stage ahead of being on the receiving end of a comfortable defeat to Gauff. The points earned shoots her up four positions into 11th. Belinda Bencic subsequently drops down into 12th thanks to these moves.
Another no-show on clay sees Amanda Anisimova drop again. Injuries at a key time in the year has compounded a poor 2026 in terms of results. With two Grand Slam finals and a WTA 1000 title yet to defend, her position in the rankings could come under scrutiny. The American is also in desperate need of points if she is going to make the return to Riyadh and defend that semi-final showing.
It is looking more and more likely that two new players will be involved this year compared to last year's lineup. Madison Keys in 22nd and Jasmine Paolini in 31st have not got their seasons up and running in the way expected or cherished. There is still plenty of time to turn it around, but that time will soon be running out as others around them extend that gap to the top.
