Former
Wimbledon doubles champion Frederik Nielsen has
backed Dermark’s
Caroline Wozniacki to emulate the success of
Kim Clijsters and
Serena Williams.
The 32-year-old announced last month that she is returning to
the WTA Tour after a gap of three years.
Nielsen, who won the 2012 Wimbledon doubles title alongside Britain’s
Jonathan Marray, while talking to
SpilXperten, backed the Danish player to have
immense success on her return to professional tennis.
“Kim Clijsters was also out, and Serena was also out when
she had a child, and I think it’s somewhat underestimated how great a career
she actually had when she came back,” he said. “So there are people who have
done it before, and we shouldn’t impose limitations on these special
individuals when they don’t even have any limitations themselves.
“So we should just let them do what they can. It will be
incredibly exciting to see. As I said, she’s not doing this just for fun, but
because she believes she can compete. With the mentality she has, I wouldn’t
dismiss her for anything.”
Serena remains one of the most successful players in the
history of women’s tennis after winning 23 Grand Slam titles in her career.
On the other hand, former world number one Clijsters ended
up winning four major titles in her career.
Wozniacki announced her retirement back in 2020 to start a family.
Before that, the Odense-born rose to the number one spot in the WTA ranking in 2010.
In her 15-year-long career after turning pro, her only Grand
Slam title triumph came in 2018 when she clinched the Australian Open after
defeating Romania’s Simona Halep in the final with a score of 7–6(7–2), 3–6,
6–4.
