Despite her dominant run during the group stage of the
WTA Finals,
Jessica Pegula saw her title dreams come to an end in the final at the hands of
Iga Swiatek, leaving the American emotional during the trophy ceremony.
Swiatek cruised past Pegula in a landslide 6-1 6-0 victory, cementing her position as the best player at the WTA Finals. Although the Polish star was clearly the favorite, the spectators showed their appreciation for Pegula, with chants of "Jessie, Jessie Jessie" reverberating around the court during the trophy presentation.
Pegula visibly touched by showing of support from fans
During the trophy presentation, Pegula was praised by co-tournament director Gus Santoscoy for her solid performance during the elite event.
"Jess, I know you're not unbeaten in Mexico but you will come back stronger and you will win this someday," he said.
This led to the crowd chanting the American's name, a gesture that was appreciated by the World No.5 who was on the verge of tears as she stood up to acknowledge the cheers.
