Staged at the Tennis Club de Genève at Parc des Eaux-Vives, the oldest and largest tennis club in Switzerland, the Geneva Open returned to the ATP calendar in 2015 after staying away from it since 1991.
Bjorn Borg, Mats Wilander and Thomas Muster won the title in Geneva during that first stint since 1980, with Thomaz Bellucci as the first champion of the restored event in 2015. Home star Stan Wawrinka lifted the trophy in 2016 and 2017, with Marton Fucsovics and Alexander Zverev as the winners in the previous two editions. Zverev will not defend the title between May 16-22, but the organizers are pleased to announce the home hero Roger Federer as the top seed.
With Roland Garros pushed forward by a week, Roger decided to enter Geneva before making a Paris trip, seeking the first clay title in Switzerland since Gstaad 2004. At the moment, Roger's biggest rivals should be Denis Shapovalov, Cristian Garin, the Monte Carlo semi-finalist Casper Ruud, Alex de Minaur, Fabio Fognini and Borna Coric.
Roger will play only his second ATP tournament of the season in Geneva, staying away from the court for 13 months due to knee injury and two surgeries in 2020. Federer's last match on clay came in June 2019 when he lost to Rafael Nadal in straight sets at the Roland Garros semi-final.
