The 2024 Queen's Club Championships is a flagship tournament on the road to Wimbledon and the London based tournament now has its entry list confirmed ahead of the 17-23 June, 2024 slot before SW19.
The final year at least for now when it will be the only tournament held on the grass of the prestigious Queen's Club. It will be joined by a WTA 500 tournament in 2025 the week before and it acts as the first preparation and for some only before Wimbledon. It sits two weeks after Roland Garros.
This means that for a lot of players are now taking the leap into grass at this point and one of those who did so to great effect last season was one Carlos Alcaraz. The Spaniard hardly played grass before last season, but despite a lot not being expected he confounded expectations. He went on to win the Queen's Club Championships title and then Wimbledon in the subsequent weeks.
It will be an interesting decision for Alcaraz with Mallorca also the week after and whether he doubles up then plays Wimbledon. Especially given his lack of practice going into the clay court season due to injury, this may leave him vulnerable heading into a pivotal juncture of the season.
He is joined by a few top names that won't play in Halle with that field led by Jannik Sinner, Alexander Zverev and Daniil Medvedev. In London, Alcaraz is joined by Grigor Dimitrov, Alex de Minaur and Taylor Fritz, All are very much staple parts of the furniture at Queen's. De Minaur in particular will likely base himself in the UK throughout the grass court season with his girlfriend, Katie Boulter being a star attraction at WTA tournaments in her home country.
Queen's has a long and storied tradition dating back to its inception in 1890. It is one of the oldest tennis tournaments in the world and is known for its rich heritage and tradition. Legends including Rod Laver, John McEnroe, Boris Becker, Pete Sampras, and Andy Murray have all played in the tournament. The latter will likely be presumed to be playing.
Murray initially entered the entry list in April, but is currently not there so either has withdrawn or will receive a wildcard. His brother Jamie Murray will become tournament director at Queen's it was announced last December. So it is a tournament steeped in history for the Brit both himself and his brother. But it may also be a decision based on his participation in Surbiton after just returning from injury the week prior. But being a multiple winner and it being his farewell year, it is safe to say he will be there. But can Alcaraz defend his title? It has proved a tough task before as past winners have shown.
