Alexander
Zverev revealed that he was recently hospitalized following his participation
in the
Laver Cup. The German player experienced obvious issues during his match
against Taylor Fritz on the final day of the tournament, where he secured a
crucial victory for Team Europe to win the title.
However,
this came at a high cost for Zverev, who later learned that he had inflammation
in his lung that would take a few months to heal completely. The German
withdrew from the
China Open a week ago to take some time off before traveling
to the
Shanghai Masters.
Zverev hospitalized with lung inflammation
The world
No. 2 provided an update on his health status, acknowledging that he had even
been admitted to the hospital and had to take antibiotics: “Yeah, I had a bit
of a lung issue. I have an inflammation in my lung that's going to take a few
months; it's going to take about two to three months to be completely gone,” he
said after withdrawing from the China Open.
“So, taking
medication, but the reason I pulled out of Beijing was that I was quite sick; I
had quite a high fever during and after the Laver Cup,” the 2-time Grand Slam
runner-up added. “I ended up in the hospital. I didn't feel great and also just
didn't have the energy to play. I was on antibiotics for a week.”
“I feel
better now, but, of course, the issue with my lung is not gone; it's still
there,” he continued. “I still have a feeling of maybe being a bit more tired
than I'm used to, but it's either I'm going to take the whole season off now or
I'm going to play the way I can play.”
“It's
nothing that will delay the recovery or will make it worse if I play, that's
what the doctor said, and that's why I'm here, and I'm happy to give my 100
percent of what I have.”
Zverev will
debut on Friday against Italian player Mattia Bellucci (No. 101), who came
through qualifying and defeated Billy Harris (No. 106) in the first round by
6-3, 6-4.
