The
Laver Cup may be months away from commencing but players are quickly getting their name pencilled in for the team event as Team Europe and Team World collide once more in London. The two latest names to be confirmed for the event taking place from September 25-27 are
Alexander Zverev and
Alex de Minaur.
A very unique tournament, it has drawn a numerous number of comparisons with the Ryder Cup, a golf tournament that pairs the best golfers in the world from Europe and USA against each other. This has inspired tennis who since 2017 have hosted their version. Six players from Europe and six players from the rest of the world will team up in an exhibition tournament as they look to claim the bragging rights for their respected team.
A popular event among the best tennis players in the world, both
Carlos Alcaraz and Taylor Fritz have already confirmed their places in the next tournament at the O2. The duo have been regulars for the past few years and despite the tight ATP schedule surrounding it, they are more than happy to join the team surroundings and battle on court for the honours.
Zverev and de Minaur the latest to be confirmed
So far that makes two players from each team confirmed for the event. Zverev has been a familiar face on the tournament with him helping Europe win a number of titles in Prague (2017), Chicago (2018), Geneva (2019), Boston (2021) and his home country capital Berlin (2024).
He is not stopping there, motivated to get Team Europe back on the top step after their surprising defeat last year. He will be returning to familiar surroundings, having won the 2018 ATP Finals at the O2.
“I always love being part of the Laver Cup,” Zverev
commented. “The team atmosphere is incredible, and the intensity is unlike anything else we play all year. London is a great tennis city and The O2 is one of the most special stadiums in the world for me and has already delivered some unforgettable moments for this event. I’m excited to return and hopefully we can win the title back for Team Europe.”
He has already been welcomed back with open arms by team captain Yannick Noah. “Sascha understands this competition as well as anyone,” Noah said. “He’s been part of all of Team Europe’s Laver Cup victories over the years, and even in tough moments he’s someone the team can rely on. His experience, leadership and competitiveness will be hugely important for us as we aim to win back the Cup.”
The world number one and three are set to make a formidable foundation to build a team upon, but you should not count out Team World just yet. De Minaur has been phenomenal this year, making a huge impression in the Australian Open before eventually losing out to the eventual winner Alcaraz. He has since come back from that disappointment by winning the ABN AMRO Open after final defeats in 2024 and 2025 left a sour taste in his mouth.
Previously on the team in 2022 and 2025, the Aussie will compete in his third Laver Cup campaign after being hugely pivotal in their success in both of those years. He will look to keep up that 100% record in London when the time comes.
“Laver Cup is one of the most intense and exciting weeks on the calendar,” de Minaur said. “Playing in London in 2022 was a special moment for our team, and San Francisco showed what this group is capable of. I loved playing under Andre last year and I’m really looking forward to getting back out there in London with him and the team."
Alex de Minaur won the 2026 ABN AMRO Open title
His coach, Andre Agassi, was glad to welcome him back. “Alex is a fierce competitor and the consummate professional,” Agassi stated. “Our week together in San Francisco gave me an even greater appreciation for him and what he brings to the team. I’m extremely excited to have him back as a part of Team World.”
