American
fans reacted on social media to
Christopher Eubanks' defeat against world No.
170 Benjamin Hassan at the Paris 2024
Olympic Games. The American No. 11,
currently ranked outside the top 100, lost decisively 4-6, 2-6, joining Marcos
Giron as the Americans eliminated in the first round.
It took
Hassan less than an hour to secure his first Olympic victory. Coming from
Lebanon, he obtained a spot through a Universality place. According to the ITF,
these spots are allocated to countries underrepresented in the Olympic Games
and are given to National Olympic Committees.
Eubanks faces backlash after Olympic defeat
Criticism
of Eubanks quickly emerged on social media, with fans expressing their
frustration over the American's disappointing performance. Among the players
ranked higher than him who could have taken his spot are
Frances Tiafoe, Ben
Shelton,
Sebastian Korda, and
Brandon Nakashima, among others.
Considering
that Paris 2024 is being held on the clay courts of Roland Garros, Eubanks
faced a challenging task on a surface where he has just one ATP-level victory,
with a record of 1-7 (12.5%). However, against a 29-year-old opponent who has
barely reached the top 150, Eubanks was still somewhat favored for his debut.
Therefore,
the disappointing loss drew heavy criticism from American fans, who saw one of
their representatives quickly exit against an opponent who, on paper, seemed a
favorable draw. “Huge! But to be fair Chris shouldn’t have been at the
Olympics,” highlighted one fan.
“Eubanks is only there to film Coco's
tiktoks,” another fan wrote. “Chris even being there is embarrassing for USA. I
blame Ben.”
“Any
thoughts on fake tough guy
Ben Shelton hiding? Can’t believe we had to send
this clown to represent USA v Lebanon”
“Wow! What on
earth happened? Chris Eubanks on clay is not a ball of fire but this is still a
shocking upset. First Naomi Osaka and now this! Congratulations to the Hassan,
his country will be proud!”
“How did they
choose team usa tennis?”
“Talk about a
fall...Eubanks has really fallen off.”
Here are
some other reactions on social media to Eubanks' early exit.
