Coco Gauff as usual in the first round of her Olympic Games journey did as she does at Grand Slams quite often and dominate in fairly simple fashion. She thrashed Ajla Tomljanovic 6-3, 6-0 in the first round of the women's singles.
Gauff who spoke out about leaving the conditions of the Olympic Village due to the bathroom situation is playing a myriad of events. She is entered into three and said she is commonly asked about how many matches she needs to win.
But isn't sure how to answer them due to how many she is playing and also the want to win all of them. She next faces Maria Lourdes Carle in the second round and it is thick and fast as it takes place on Monday.
“People in the (athletes) village are asking: ‘Oh, how many do you need to win?’” said Gauff as per PA. “I’m like, ‘I don’t know. I’m in three events, and I want to win all of them.’
But despite the nerves that come with playing singles, she was more nervous for her opener in doubles so it settled her down to face the Aussie who ended the career of Serena Williams previously.
“I’m not going to lie: I was more nervous in doubles than singles. I don’t know why. I think it’s just because it was the first match,” the No. 2-ranked Gauff said. “And I think when you start off a tournament with a win, especially one like this, it just gives you more confidence.”
