Kevin Anderson continued his resurgence in Vienna with another stellar performance and victory against
Daniil Medvedev.
That victory propelled the South African into the Erste Bank Open semifinals. It took him just over an hour and a half to win 6-4 7-6(5). Medvedev arrived in Vienna in struggling form which he demonstrated in his native Russian a couple of weeks ago. In his first match, he faced similar struggled against Pospisil but overcame them. Now facing a similar player in Anderson his struggled once again surfaced. In the first game of the match Medvedev struggled to hit any serve and Anderson broke him to take an early lead. From there it was a rather smooth sailing set for Anderson who served well and maintained the lead. Ultimately Daniil had only one break point which he failed to use and Anderson won the opening set6-4.
The 2nd set was a proper battle between the two players. Anderson continued to give Medvedev troubles with the Russian having to save break points early in the match. The South African himself had no issues winning his own service games thanks to his stellar serving and great baseline play. After the initial struggled Medvedev settled in nicely and the two players ended up deciding the winner in the tiebreak. More of the same issues for Medvedev arose there with the Russian once again struggling to hit his serve. The weaker 2nd serve gave Anderson opportunities and he won 4 mini-breaks in the tiebreak to win it 7-5.
A stellar showing from him and a strong victory for his first semifinal in a very long time. Congratulations.
