The ATP Adelaide International is set to take place from January 12-18 with the players looking to get valuable match fitness and sharpness ahead of the Australian Open which closely follows the conclusion to this event. As well as that, prize money and ranking points signal a huge motivation for many players.
After the withdrawal from Novak Djokovic, it is a very open field with the winner possibly coming from anywhere. The highest seed in the tournament is Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. The world number 14 is still looking for his maiden ATP title, widely recognised as one of the best players in the world to not boast one. He will be hoping to start his season by breaking new ground.
Someone who knows how to win in Adelaide is Jiri Lehecka. The 2024 champion came back from a set deficit to defeat Jack Draper a couple of years ago. He then followed that up the next year with a triumph in the Brisbane International thanks to an early retirement by Reilly Opelka. These are his only ATP titles, with the Czech number one looking to add a third Down Under.
Tommy Paul is the third seed. He started last year very brightly with a brace of Grand Slam quarter-finals but injuries derailed his progress, with a clean slate for the American to start on. Francisco Cerundolo, Tallon Griekspoor and Arthur Rinderknech will also try to use their seed positioning to their advantage.
19-year-old Joao Fonseca will begin as the seventh seed, with high aspirations of a title run. He burst onto the ATP scene last year, enjoying an incredible breakthrough where he showcased his immense talent regularly, picking up a brace of titles while rising into the top 30. Valentin Vacherot also endured a remarkable rise after winning the Shanghai Masters in a remarkable fashion. He completes the seedings in Adelaide.
This means that Stefanos Tsitsipas will not have a number by his name. Tennis fans may need to get used to this with his form on the court not what it was a few years ago when he was regularly reaching big finals and challenging for the biggest titles in the sport. After a good showing in the United Cup for Greece, he will be hoping to roll back the years and get back to the levels he once showcased on the court.
