ATP Rankings Update: Carlos Alcaraz overtakes Zverev for No. 2 as Ben Shelton faces top-10 danger

The ATP hardcourt swing has begun, and the first ranking movements of the summer have already arrived. The biggest headline is the return of Carlos Alcaraz to the world No. 2 position, with the Spaniard moving back ahead of Alexander Zverev despite still waiting for his comeback to competition.
Alcaraz’s rise comes after the adjustment of the ATP calendar caused players to lose their Canadian Open points. Zverev reached the semifinals in Montreal last year, while Alcaraz did not compete at the tournament, meaning the German was more heavily affected by the points drop.
The change puts Alcaraz back behind Jannik Sinner in the rankings and restores the top-three order that dominated much of the previous season. However, the Spaniard’s stay at No. 2 could be temporary, as Zverev will have the opportunity to reclaim the position during the Canadian Open if he reaches at least the fourth round.
The movement at the top was not the only significant change ahead of the North American hardcourt swing. Daniil Medvedev and Flavio Cobolli gained positions inside the top 10, while Alex de Minaur and Ben Shelton were among the biggest losers after the points adjustment. Shelton, the defending Canadian Open champion, dropped close to the edge of the top 10 and also lost his status as the highest-ranked American player to Taylor Fritz.
Sinner, Alcaraz and Zverev continue to lead the rankings
The top of the ATP rankings continues to be controlled by the three Grand Slam champions of 2025 and 2026. Sinner remains the world No. 1 after his Wimbledon triumph, while Alcaraz returns to No. 2 despite almost four months away from competition.
The Spaniard’s ability to remain inside the top three throughout such a long absence highlights the strength of the ranking advantage he built during a dominant period that began in 2025. Alcaraz had established himself as one of the most consistent forces on tour, and his latest ranking boost reflects the impact of that previous success.
Zverev remains close behind in third place, but the German will have a direct opportunity to respond in Canada. After winning his maiden Grand Slam title at Roland Garros, he enters the hardcourt swing with another chance to challenge the established order near the top of the rankings.

The latest update also produced notable changes inside the top 10. Medvedev moved up to No. 6, while Felix Auger-Aliassime and Novak Djokovic remained in their previous positions. Alongside Sinner, they were the only top-10 players who did not change places after the points adjustment.
Meanwhile, Shelton was one of the players most affected by the Canadian Open points drop. The American, who won the title in Toronto last year, lost valuable points and was overtaken by Taylor Fritz as the new American No. 1.
Fritz’s rise adds another layer to the North American swing, with the American now carrying the pressure of defending his position among the elite. Shelton, meanwhile, will need a strong result in Canada to avoid further movement outside the top-10 group.

Bublik closes in while Jodar and Musetti make moves
Outside the top 10, Alexander Bublik continues to close the gap toward the elite group. The Kazakh will have a major opportunity during the Canadian Open, although returning to the top 10 would likely require a deep run combined with an early exit from Shelton.
The battle for the top 15 has also become increasingly competitive. Rafael Jodar was one of the biggest movers after his impressive run to the DC Open final, pushing himself firmly into the top-15 conversation and strengthening his position among the rising generation.
Lorenzo Musetti was another player to benefit from the latest update after a strong run that allowed him to climb several places. Although the Italian remains outside the top-10 battle, his recent performances have generated positive momentum ahead of the final stretch of the season, especially after missing the previous two Grand Slams due to injury.
