In a match filled with emotion, the Frenchman left it all on the court as he battled but ultimately failed to defeat his Norwegian opponent. Nonetheless, the Parisian crowd was fully behind Tsonga, with not a dry eye in the house at match point before their hometown hero finally played the last shot of his professional career.
The 37-year old announced his intentions to retire following the 2022 French Open, leaving an indelible mark on the sport. Climbing as high as World No.5 and winning 18 ATP titles including two Masters 1000 trophies, Tsonga was an idol and inspiration for several younger superstars.
Felix Auger-Aliassime was one of tennis' next generation inspired by the charismatic Frenchman, and the World No.9 spoke on Tsonga's influence on his life and game.
“It’s always sad to see idols of you retiring,” the Canadian said. “Personally I feel sad but also happy for Jo, he’s starting his new life, new adventures with his family and everything. but he was an idol of mine growing up.
"Also to have someone who is similar to you, has a similar story, to see him on TV, what he was doing, it was inspiring for me for his game, for his charisma and for the person he was.”
