Defending champion, Carlos Alcaraz has continued his march towards the fourth round of the 2023 US Open with victory over Brit ace, Dan Evans.
Alcaraz claimed it 6-2, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 surviving a late Evans surge, with the recent Washington champion prolonging the tie for the current World No.1 a little bit longer.
But it was a mere blip in the road for the Spaniard who takes his spot in the Last 16. It has been a bit of a damp squib tonight for the Brits with Cameron Norrie getting thumped by Matteo Arnaldi also tonight, while Jack Draper has been the main player to produce reaching the fourth round.
It looked ominous for Evans from the start with a break and he went 4-0 up with a double break. Evans had a moan at the umpire as someone got into his players box who wasn't supposed to be there. But the distraction didn't prove a good omen as he went 5-1 down from there.
He took a hold, but Alcaraz continued to target the backhand of Evans to push him further behind the baseline. Evans earned a break point drawing an error, but spurned multiple opportunities and Alcaraz managed to turn it around despite a scrappy game including a double fault at the end.
Evans this time went 2-0 up, but Alcaraz soon got him back and the Brit was in disbelief as the Spaniard's power was on full show to make it 2-2.
It was four games in a row from there for Alcaraz who made it 4-2 with an easy service hold. The epic was produced as Alcaraz lifted a lob over Evans and the Spaniard netted in the subsequent rally. After all that though Evans held.
But similar to the first set, the resolve of Evans waned in saving multiple set points and an overhead winner after lobs and tweeners handed Alcaraz a two set advantage.
Evans though fought and Alcaraz saved multiple set points only for the latter to falter at the wrong time and Evans found his way into a fourth set.
Only for Alcaraz to rip apart Evans again to seal the victory as the former produced more moments of magic that on a different day Evans would've reaped the benefits of going out. But when it's your day, it's your day and with an exquisite forehand winner, he claimed the final set 6-3.
