Nuno Borges achieved a remarkable victory over Rafael Nadal in the Bastad Open final with a score of 6-3, 6-2, securing his first professional title. The Portuguese player became only the fourth player to defeat Nadal in straight sets in a clay-court final, joining Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, and Andy Murray.
Borges stunned the world with a commanding win over the former world No. 1, who had been on a high throughout the week but ran out of steam in the final. Nadal was playing his 131st final but was unable to secure another title, with his last trophy coming at the 2022 French Open against Casper Ruud.
Nuno Borges achieved what may be the most significant victory of his career. Despite Rafael Nadal's current struggles, increasingly approaching retirement and having participated in only a few tournaments over the past two seasons, Nadal remains the undisputed King of Clay. He had an impressive week, including victories over Cameron Norrie and Mariano Navone in a thrilling 4-hour match.
Borges becomes the fourth player to defeat Nadal in straight sets in a clay-court final, joining Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, and Andy Murray. The 22-time Grand Slam champion commented after the match: “The level of my tennis in the final was so far from what it should be. I had a long week with extended encounters, and the energy was low today. My body is fine and there is no damage; that's important. However, I'm not used to competing in four competitive days and embracing long duels; it presented a mental and physical test.”
There are few precedents for Nadal's defeats in clay finals. In his 20-year career, with over 70 clay-court finals played, only three players had previously beaten him in straight sets in his favorite surface. Federer achieved his most impressive win over Nadal on clay at the Madrid Open during its inaugural year on clay—one of the two times Federer defeated Nadal on clay, and the only one in straight sets.
The biggest challenge for Nadal on clay has been Novak Djokovic, who is the only player to have repeated straight-sets victories in clay finals against Nadal. Djokovic achieved this for the first time in his legendary 2011 season, with wins at the Madrid Open and Rome Open finals and repeated it at the 2013 Monte-Carlo Masters.
The last time Nadal lost a clay final was at the 2015 Madrid Open, this time to Andy Murray. Nadal's record in clay finals now stands at an incredible 63-9 (87.5%).
