Daniil Medvedev's title in the Brisbane International has proved that he is returning to his best form after a lull in results over 2025 which saw him drop down the rankings. This is not just a unique title in the fact that it is the 22nd city he has won in, but now he joins an exclusive club with a hat-trick of titles won in Australia.
He can firmly be put in the same list as Roger Federer and Lleyton Hewitt as players to have won both the Sydney International and the Brisbane International.
It is a record hard to come by now with the tournament in Sydney not being played anymore, with it being replaced with the United Cup as Sydney joins Perth in being one of the host cities. Medvedev played won the event in 2018, defeating home hero Alex de Minaur in the final. Coincidentally, this was his first title on the ATP Circuit, being a huge milestone for him. A year later in 2019, he made a run all the way to the final in Brisbane, looking to make it onto the list. However, his entry was not allowed after defeat to former US Open finalist Kei Nishikori.
Seven years later, and the deed is finally done. Going into Brisbane as the number one seed, he dropped just one set enroute to the final before overcoming Brandon Nakashima
6-2, 7-6 (1) to finally lift the title. It is golden preparation for the Australian Open, an event which would complete his accolades Down Under. He has made it to three finals, but failed to win any of them despite being two sets up in two of them.
As for the winners in Sydney and Brisbane, there are only a few players who could join themselves in this list, with de Minaur the most likely. The year after losing the final he sought vengeance, and got it by winning the title in 2019.
22 titles, 22 cities
It is a pretty outstanding and unique
22 titles for the former world number one. The first came in Sydney, with titles in Winston-Salem and Tokyo closely following. After the Brisbane disappointment, he swiftly got back in the winning enclosure in Sofia. He made a brace of Masters 1000 finals on the spin in 2019. Unable to pick up victory in Canada, he quickly made up for it in Cincinnati.
He collected two more titles in 2019 in the St Petersburg and Shanghai. It was over a year before he once again tasted success, doing so in two highly prestigious events. First the Paris Masters in the French Capital before triumphing in the ATP Finals in London.
Four titles came on the trot in 2021. They came in Marseille, Mallorca, Toronto, and New York, with the final one being his first and only to date Grand Slam title. From August 2022 to February 2023 he won five titles, showing his class on the court. These came in Los Cabos, Vienna, Rotterdam, Qatar and Dubai. After failing to add Indian Wells to the list, he lifted silverware in Miami and Rome before going on a long title drought. This takes us up to October 2025, where he ended this barren spell with the Almaty Open in Almaty, Kazakhstan. The 22nd and most recent came in Brisbane, continuing this astonishing trend of winning in different cities.
The next target for Medvedev is to make it 23 in Melbourne at the Australian Open. It will be a very tricky task, but the 28-year-old will believe he has the capabilities to get the job done.
