Carlos Alcaraz has eliminated the Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic in the round of 16 of the
Australian Open and has qualified for the first time in his career for the quarterfinals of the first Grand Slam of the season (6-4/6-4/6-0). His opponent in the next round will be none other than Germany's Alexander Zverev.
Undoubtedly it will be the first big test for Carlitos who has been overcoming the first four rounds of the first Grand Slam of the year with some ease until reaching the key moment of the tournament where the 8 best remaining players in the draw will play for the title. There is no doubt that Novak Djokovic is the big favorite, but the player from Murcia already knows what it means to win a Grand Slam final, so watch out for him.
FIRST SET.
The first set of Carlos Alcaraz was perfect. He did not make a single error with his serve, did not allow a single break against and took advantage of one of the two he had against the powerful serve of his opponent to take the first set. He won 79% of the first serves he put into play and 55% of the second serves, against only 45% of his rival.
In addition, he got four aces. Undoubtedly, the strategy of deeper baseline returns is working for him, being much more aggressive than before. His open serve is also working to perfection;
SECOND SET.
At the beginning of the second set, both players started with authority winning their respective serves without giving any option of breaking serve. With 3-3 on the scoreboard Alcaraz smelled blood on his opponent's serve and again increased the intensity of his returns.
With his serve, Carlos again gave his opponent no options with the rest. No option for a Kecmanovic who could not guess the serves of an opponent who, with only two hits in the duel (2 of 3 in break balls) was about to get 2 sets to 0.
Carlos again had break points to close the set, but this time the Serbian managed to save them and put the score at 5-4. With his serve he did not give any option and closed the second set also by 6-4.
END OF THE MATCH
Carlos was still very fast on his legs and very intense at the start of the third set as he had been since the first point of the match. He knew it was time to keep hurting his opponent, he was very aggressive, broke from the start and won his serve with ease to take a 2-0 lead in the third set;
The next game came another break for Carlos who, despite Kecmanovic tried to move him from side to side, did not stop hurting him with the crosscourt and put the 3-0 on the scoreboard with a brutal forehand that lifted from the seats the audience that crowded the Rod Laver Arena. In the end, he ended up closing the match without any problems by 6-4/6-4/6-0.
Gasquet, Sonego, Shang and Kecmanovic, the four victims of a Carlos Alcaraz who has barely dropped a set against the Italian in the second round and has been gradually picking up pace (remember that the Australian Open is his first tournament of the year) and will now face an Alexander Zverez who has been on court for much longer. Match in all its glory with the dream of a hypothetical final against Novak Djokovic at the end of the road;
