Carlos Alcaraz has returned after a vacation to play the
Cincinnati Open which begins mainly on Tuesday August 12 with only first round match on Monday.
Alcaraz though has set his aims directly at a certain Jannik Sinner. The Spaniard has set his aim to be World No.1 by the end of the year both in the lead rankings as well as the Race to Turin. He is just 450 points behind in that goal which acts as a guide for the year end No.1 position and would hold the key for Alcaraz regaining the spot he previously had at the start of his rise.
With no Novak Djokovic shaped roadblock, the two players seen as the future of the sport will be able to battle it out in future months aside from if Djokovic does win a Grand Slam. He plays less tournaments than the leading two so if they keep winning, it would be a two horse race of sorts.
“Obviously being No. 1 is a goal every time that I am [behind] and the race is an important ranking for me,” said Alcaraz.
“At the end of the year, if you end the race No. 1, in the rankings [it is] quite similar, so you're going to end the No. 1. So I'm really focused on that. I'm focused on going to every tournament, thinking about playing great tennis, doing a good result just to get better in the race.
“This year, ending the year as No. 1 is one of my main goals right now. So I'm looking forward to doing it and let's see. I’m fighting for being No. 1 in the race, that's something that I really want to to do as soon as possible, if I could do it in the future,” added Alcaraz.
“This one is a really important tournament, really good tournament for me. So I'm going to try to play good tennis, try to play same level as I was playing, and let's see.”
