Novak Djokovic has once again helped another player get back on the court quicker than expected. Albeit just merely from advice having gone through the same procedure recently with
Hubert Hurkacz lauding the Serbian.
Hurkacz suffered a meniscus tear in his knee in similar vain to Novak Djokovic as he gave up in his match against Arthur Fils at Wimbledon. Ironically the Frenchman was the catalyst for multiple injuries with Alex de Minaur also having a freak injury against him.
De Minaur has only played doubles since then whilst for Hurkacz, he came back at the
Canadian Open. It was a shorter turnaround time too compared to Djokovic in order to return. It was the 24-time Grand Slam champion who gave him advice with Hurkacz giving him a phone call to sought out what to do.
Djokovic in particular showed it could be done. He played Wimbledon mere weeks after surgery when it looked like he would be a doubt for the US Open no mind SW19 or the Olympic Games. “Definitely just really inspiring what he did, especially winning the gold medal," said Hurkacz to the
ATP.
“I also texted Novak. He was really, really supportive and helpful as well and it just was a different situation, it was a difficult situation trying to make the decision. At the end I knew I needed to have surgery.”
He initially said to Eurosport that he was given a 2025 prognosis on returning and maybe in Australia. He returned weeks later though and now looks ahead to Cincinnati and the US Open without having to return in 2025.
“I spoke to the doctors right after my injury and eight out of ten said that realistically I could only play in Australia," he said to Eurosport prior to returning in Canada. He reached the Quarter-Finals in Montreal only losing to eventual finalist Alexei Popyrin.
