French tennis player Terence Atmane played the best tennis of his life at last week's Cincinnati Open, reaching the semifinals. However, 23-year old announced his sudden withdrawal from the upcoming US Open, and has finally broken his silence on why he's skipping the final Grand Slam event of the season.
After battling through the qualifying rounds at the Cincinnati Open, Atmane stunned the tennis community with his performance at the ATP Masters 1000 event. The Frenchman went on an amazing run that saw him score wins over Flavio Cobolli, Joao Fonseca, Taylor Fritz and Holger Rune en route to his maiden semifinal at an ATP Masters tournament.
Atmane's remarkable journey came to an end at the hands of World No.1 Jannik Sinner, as the Italian overcame a difficult first set challenge to escape with a 7-6(4) 6-2 victory. Nonetheless, Atmane had announced his intentions as a threat to watch out for at Flushing Meadows.
However, Atmane would shock tennis fans by announcing his withdrawal from the qualifying rounds of the US Open. Although his ATP ranking had risen to World No.69 after his performance in Cincinnati, he was not ranked high enough to warrant an automatic entry when the player list was released.

Atmane reveals injury diagnosis

The left-handed star was forced to participate in the qualifying rounds for the US Open, as he was not granted a wildcard entry. However, Atmane pulled out of the event without citing any reason at the time.
The 23-year old would soon give the reasoning behind his decision, as he took to social media to announce he had suffered a foot injury.
"Hello everyone,” Atmane began in an Instagram story. “After a foot MRI yesterday in NY (New York) we detected an: intermediate grade partial tearing of the media collateral ligament of the first MTP (metatarsophalangeal) joint. Grade two muscle injury involves the medial head of the flexor hallucis brevis. Low-grade partial tearing of the medial sesamoidal phalangeal ligament.
“Which in other terms won’t make me able to play the US Open. I do feel sad about it because with the last result I want to push for more but trying to be smart and get myself ready for Asia was the best decision for my team and I. See you guys in Chengdu."
With Atmane no longer competing at the US Open, his next scheduled tournament will be at the ATP 250 event in Chengdu, which kicks off on September 15, 2025.
