Matteo Berrettini has put Italy one match away from another
Davis Cup title after defeating Pablo Carreno Busta 6-3, 6-4.
The Finals, held in front of a home crowd in Bologna, has always been an exciting day in the tennis calendar, and Berrettini has certainly lived up to that tag. While he did the job needed, his opponent could not find his best game. He had a squabble with the umpire at one point during the second set and after the match had culminated, with it just not his best day.
Berrettini boost title hopes with key win
The Italian has enjoyed a very successful record for Italy while competing for them in the Davis Cup, having won 11 of his last 13 singles matches. This incredible form was a big reason for Italy's recent success, and could be a big factor if they go on to clinch the title.
It was very tight between the pair early on. Both managed to hold on their serves but pushed each other. Two holds to love left Berrettini 4-3 ahead, before he clinched an all-important break. On his third opportunity, he took command of the tie and would have no issue in serving it out instantly after.
This positive momentum almost continued into the second set where the former Wimbledon finalist managed to muster up another two break point opportunities. He was unable to convert as Carreno Busta won four points on the bounce to keep his nose in front.
Similar to the first set, both players looked in control when on their serves. This was until the tie was level at 4-4. Berrettini once more upped the gears and dealt with the pressure better than his opponent to nick a vital break of serve. This gave him full authority as he looked to serve the first match in this highly important final. He did this with no issue to move Italy one win away from a third consecutive Davis Cup title.
Flavio Cobolli will be looking to complete this task in the second singles match as he takes on Jaume Munar. If Cobolli wins, Italy take home the coveted title. If Munar clinches it, the final will be in the hands of the two double partner. Simone Bolelli/Andrea Vavassori and Marcel Granollers/Pedro Martinez will be waiting in the wings. Follow our live
