Former US Open champion
Daniil Medvedev has had a great year at times but it all came to a sudden head during the Monte-Carlo Masters last week when he lost to Matteo Berrettini in one of his worst ever defeats.
Medvedev lost out 6-0, 6-0 in what was the first double bagel of his career but he was clearly frustrated at this
destroying one of his racquets during the match. His outburst was such that he was not only given a violation for this but he was also fined for the incident as he was not only well beaten but found himself losing part of his prize money anyway.
Over the past year, Medvedev's outbursts have become more frequent. He has struggled to make deep runs in Grand Slams but he has managed to win titles at lower level and attempt to revive himself. Albeit he is currently World No.10 and has not been higher since back in June 2025.
The ATP fined Medvedev 6,000 euros or $7,000 for smashing his racquet in a straight sets 6-0, 6-0 loss to Berrettini. At the time, he gave Medvedev a code violation for unsportsmanlike conduct but the ATP decided to punish him further.
This is the third time in the last year that he has been fined for such actions. He was fined even more at two Grand Slams for further incidents. He was slapped with $76,000 for incidents at the Australian Open and $42,500 for conduct at the 2025 US Open.
Medvedev dropped the second game of the set and eighth straight game of the match, the 30-year-old smashed his racquet multiple times in dramatic fashion before throwing it in the bin. He went on to lose the match in under an hour without winning a game, the first time that has happened during his career.
Speaking to Sky Sports Tennis, Jamie Murray said: "It is shocking and it shouldn't happen but it did.
"I don't know how much effect that will have on him going forward but I'm sure he will be pretty embarrassed walking back to the locker room and I'd be wanting to get off site pretty quickly, I think, if that was the performance I put in today."
