Daniil Medvedev (No. 3) defeated Holger Rune (No. 7) in an intense encounter by 7-5, 6-4, advancing to the semifinals of Indian Wells. The Russian overcame the moments of brilliance from the 20-year-old player and ended the match with good sensations before facing Tommy Paul (No. 17).
The first set swung back and forth, with both players generating several break points in most of the games. The first break came in favor of Rune, who led 4-3, but Medvedev quickly recovered it in the next game. The former world No. 1 created a couple more opportunities and ultimately secured his second break to win the set 7-5.
The second set had a spicy start when Rune hit two balls at Medvedev's body at the net, causing clear irritation from the Russian, who even put his fingers to his eyes to indicate to Rune that he is watching him.
Rune seized the tense moment and showcased some of his best repertoire by earning a break in the second game. However, the Dane couldn't hold his serve and committed several unforced errors, especially from the forehand side, allowing Medvedev to break him twice and win four consecutive games.
With the score at 4-2 in favor of the Russian, Rune again struggled with errors on his forehand and couldn't create a chance to break back. Medvedev, who won 66% of his service points, eventually sealed the match in two hours with a score of 7-5, 6-4, returning to the semifinals of Indian Wells to face the local hope Tommy Paul.
