Novak Djokovic defeated Jordan Thompson in three sets to reach the third round of the 2023 Wimbledon by 6-3, 7-6(4), 7-5.
'Nole' continues to be unbeatable at the All England Club. With his four consecutive titles in the past four editions of Wimbledon, along with his two victories on the London grass this year, Djokovic has now won 30 consecutive matches at Wimbledon.
His last defeat was against Tomas Berdych in the quarterfinals of 2017, although Djokovic retired from that match when he was trailing 6-7, 0-2. If we don't consider the match against Berdych, the last time Djokovic lost a complete match at Wimbledon was in the third round of the 2016 edition, against American player Sam Querrey in four sets.
In the opening day of this year's tournament, the world No. 2 comfortably defeated Argentine player Pedro Cachín, who is currently ranked 68th in the world. In the second round, he faced Italian player Jordan Thompson, who couldn't pose a challenge to Djokovic and lost in three sets.
The 23-time Grand Slam champion had a strong start, especially with his serve, as he only dropped two points while serving. He also hit 9 winners and no unforced errors, taking the first set in just 30 minutes. However, the Australian player showed resilience in the second set, saving both break points against him and pushing Djokovic to a tiebreak. In the tiebreak, the defending champion showcased his favoritism in the tournament and emerged victorious.
In the third set, Thompson once again showed resilience, but he couldn't withstand the relentless performance of his opponent, who stepped up with his best tennis in the crucial moments of the match. Although the Australian kept the set level until almost the end, in the 12th game Djokovic managed to break his rival to love and claim the match.
In the third round, Djokovic will face a higher-ranked opponent as the 29th seed Tomas Etcheverry and 3-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka will compete in their second-round match tomorrow.
