Emil Ruusuvuori could become a Finnish hero after he first defeated Sebastian Ofner and then outplayed Dominic Thiem.

Dominic Thiem decided to help his team in the Davis Cup in Europe / Africa Group 1 vs. Finland. Thiem played his first match against Niklas-Salminen that he managed to win in straight sets. On the second day, the Austrians led already 2-1 and Thiem could add a decisive third point against Ruusuvuori.
But to everyone's surprise, it didn't happen. Ruusuvuori dominated the match when he won 6-3 and 6-2, and so the players fought for the qualifiers spot in the fifth decisive match. In the first three-set match of the two days, Dennis Novak outplayed Heliovaara 6-3, 3-6, 7-6.
After the match Austria's captain Stefan Koubek said: “That was a long day, and I didn’t expect it. Now I can smile but it was very close. Luckily we did it. I’m proud how everyone stuck together.”
Ruusuvuori, who defeated Thiem did not hide his emotions after the match: "I’ve never had a more amazing day,” said 20-year-old Ruusuvuori. “I didn’t think the tie was over when we lost the doubles. I had to show something special to beat a guy like Thiem, and I was pretty much excellent in everything I had to do. He wasn’t so comfortable, and it went perfect. I wasn’t tired – the crowd gave me energy. I felt really good from the first point, I felt I could pressure him, I’ve beaten the world No. 5. It’s the best day of my career.”
Also Greece played at the Davis Cup in Group 3, but despite the efforts of Tsitsipas they failed to advance. Tsitsipas defeated weaker rivals after losing at the US Open. At the Davis Cup he lost only 16 games in 4 matches.
