Apostolos Tsitsipas has taken full responsibility for the serious speeding violation recorded by traffic cameras on a Greek highway chiming with what the lawyer of
Stefanos Tsitsipas said when the incident first came to light but there is an issue with this.
Tsitsipas who is the coach and father of the World No.4 took responsibility for the offence captured while driving his son's Lotus at 210km/h which triggered an electronic 2,000 euro fine and a one-year driving licence suspension.
Father of Tsitsipas appears in person but to no avail
According to the report, Tsitsipas appeared in person as per Weekend Live, a television program in Greece at the Attica Traffic Police Headquarters with proof that he had paid the 2,000 euro fine and requested to take full responsibility for the violation. He offered to surrender his own driving licence instead of his son's.
However Traffic Police rejected the request stating that the seven-day window to appeal this had already expired. The commander informed Tsitsipas that Stefanos is the registered owner of the vehicle so he must personally appear to hand over his driving licence and take the suspension himself whether Apostolos drove the car or not. He will be suspended for one year in accordance to Greek traffic law.
Stefanos Tsitsipas has remained pretty silent about the whole incident with no official statement forthcoming about this or the licence suspension.
His lawyer had stated it was a third person though which chimes that it was Apostolos Tsitsipas. Thanasis Papathanasiou, cleared it up. "Regarding the incident that was made public, the car was being driven by a third person. The issue of the fine and the surrender of the licence have all been handled," he stated.
But while he looked to potentially get off the hook, Stefanos Tsitsipas who has had a pretty poor year on the court as well as breaking up with long-time girlfriend Paula Badosa now won't be able to drive. Albeit he likely won't have to surrender said licence until he returns from Monte-Carlo where he is mainly based so it might be some time until he does return to face it.
