Holger Rune has given an update on his physical condition while revealing that he has withdrawn from the ATP
Laver Cup.
The Dane has been dealing with a back injury that he sustained months ago at the Rome Open. In August, he had to retire in his first round at the Cincinnati Open and he recently pulled out of the fourth match in the Davis Cup Finals Group Stage, where his team were playing Brazil.
The World No. 4's mother Aneke then disclosed that his back was still bothering him.
"That's why he couldn't finish the match yesterday [at the Davis Cup]. It hurts every time he pushes for the serve. And large doses of ibuprofen haven't worked."
Rune announces Laver Cup withdrawal
Now, the 20-year-old has announced his withdrawal from the upcoming Laver Cup but still said that he would support his team from a distance.
"As I am in treatment with my back it’s not possible for me to play Laver Cup next week. I would have loved to join the fight to get the trophy back to Europe and I will support my team mates from a distance," he wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Team Europe's captain Bjorn Borg has chosen
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina as Rune's replacement. The Spaniard spoke of his excitement and said that he is trying to play more consistently.
"Last year was an amazing team. I was wondering if some day they are going to call me if I’m doing great on tour. My goal this year was to play more consistent all the year.
"You play against the best players in the world at Laver Cup. I am excited to be a part of Team Europe, to share the court with other great players and to have them supporting you," he said.
