Alexander Zverev will play a final on the ATP Tour for the first time since his comeback after downing Arthur Fils 6-2, 6-4 on Saturday at the
Hamburg European Open.
Zverev was facing off against a young Frenchman firmly on the rise who was full of confidence. He offered Fils few chances in their first meeting.
But it is the former who will face Laslo Djere in Sunday's final in what will be his first tour-level championship match since Madrid in May 2022.
This of course is a surprise given that he has won 19 titles on the ATP Tour and the first since suffering his serious injury at 2022 Roland Garros.
Battling issues off court this past week being under a penalty order from his ex-girlfriend Brenda Patea for assault allegations, he has let his racquet do the talking on it.
He would become just the second German to win the title in Hamburg after Michael Stich in 1993 since the Open Era began in 1968.
Racing into a 4-0 lead against Fils, the latter struggled for consistency and he rarely looked like letting his advantage slip in a one hour 32 minute victory.
Clutch in the key moments, he converted three out of four break points and is now 32-18 for the season. Unlike Djere, he will not play next week with the Serbian currently set to head to Kitzbuhel.
