The 28-year-old Diego Schwartzman failed to win a title in 2020, but he still turned it into a memorable one, securing the year-end top-10 honor for the first time.
Diego reached the first Masters 1000 final in Rome, beating Rafael Nadal in the quarters and losing a tight final battle against Novak Djokovic. A couple of weeks later, the Argentine ousted Dominic Thiem following a five-hour fight for his maiden Major semi-final, facing Nadal again and losing in straight sets despite a great effort.
Schwartzman wants to establish himself in the top-10 in the upcoming season and challenge the rivals from the top. Following that triumph over Rafa in Rome, Diego would love to score his first victories over Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic, something he had failed to achieve in the past.
The Argentine played on a high level in his first victory over Rafa in ten encounters, producing marvelous striking and using the challenging conditions to topple the nine-time Rome champion in straight sets.
"I broke a barrier when I beat Rafa; I'm going to be able to retire, saying that I achieved that. My next goal is to score wins over Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic and lift more titles," Diego Schwartzman said.
