Flavio Cobolli found it 'impossible' to describe the feeling when he won Italy the
Davis Cup in Bologna against Spain, coming back to defeat Jaume Munar 1-6, 7-6(5), 7-5. It was also a magical moment for Italy’s Davis Cup captain Filippo Volandri, who was overwhelmed with emotion afterwards.
Itay were on course for a third title on the spin after Matteo Berrettini defeated Pablo Carreno Busta in straight sets, completing half of the work for Italy. It was up to Cobolli to complete the dream on home soil. It did not go to plan from the start after Munar came out of the blocks like a rocket. He raced into a 5-0 lead ahead of wrapping up the first set with ease.
Cobolli regained his composure and managed to find a way back into the tie. The pair were on close terms in the second set, and were only narrowly separated in a close tiebreaker, which Cobolli managed to win. It was a very nerve-wracking third set for all involved. At 6-5 ahead, Cobolli set up a magical situation where he had three championship points. He took the first one and sent Italy into jubilation. A shell-shocked Cobolli was instantly mobbed by his adoring teammates, as they celebrated a job well done.
"The only thing I know is that I’m World Champion"
"It’s impossible to describe this feeling. It’s impossible. I dreamed a lot for this night,"
Cobolli said after the match. "I played an amazing match today. I don’t know how I won. The match was tough. Jaume played so good. We cannot lose for our country. Sometimes you learn, but you never lose. If you give all you have in your heart… I don’t know what I did today. I don’t know where I am. The only thing I know is that I’m World Champion."
Reminiscing on the tie, he admitted that nerves were a factor early on but he overcame them. "I think Jaume played very well in the first set. I was a bit nervous. I was shaking a little. At the end I looked at my bench and I found something in my heart. I gave everything for this team. It was a great thing. Like I said before, I’m World Champion," he exclaimed.
His coach, Volandri, has been the Italian Davis Cup coach since 2021. He has successful overlooked a nation who has won three titles in a row, the first nation to achieve this remarkable feat since 1972 when the USA won a fifth title in a row.
It left the 44-year-old bursting with pride and emotion afterwards. “It’s the third one in a row, but I’m crying, and I didn’t cry for the first one,” Volandri happily stated. "It’s something unbelievable. We had a lot of tough moments, even if it doesn’t look like it, but we had it. But as a group what I said, we had the power to manage these moments. We felt also the players that were not here, but it was like they were here, like Jannik, like [Matteo] Arnaldi, like Musetti. It’s a big, big team and only if you have a big team, you can reach this unbelievable result, it’s incredible. Thank you, time to enjoy.”
It was an even more impressive accomplishment when you equate in the fact that their best two players,
Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Musetti, both pulled out. The world number two announced his focus on 2026 as his reason but still watched on with immense pride at what his country had completed. “Congratulations on this incredible victory,” he wrote on Instagram.
