Dominic Thiem endured a very stressful month as he awaited test results that would determine whether he would need wrist surgery or not.
The Austrian tennis player hurt his wrist at a tennis event in Mallorca that has left him sidelined for several months. Theim was set to come back at the US Open where he would have defended his title but a setback suffered during recovery forced him to abandon plans of playing tennis at all in 2021. The Austrian revealed a month ago that he might need to undergo surgery if his wrist does not heal well leaving him sidelined for up to six months.
Yesterday he shared some good news revealing that he in fact won't need any surgery which should make his recovery quicker. In a video posted on his social media he said:
“I had a very important thing today. I was in Belgium to decide if I need surgery on my wrist or not and luckily I have very, very good news. I won’t need the surgery. It’s really stable and it’s looking good, my wrist."
Thiem also revealed plans for the near future saying that he will pick up the racquet very soon:
“The next week I have to make it more flexible and strengthen my wrist, do everything to prepare to slowly start playing tennis again. I’m really looking forward to it. It’s been a pretty long time without a racquet and I honestly miss it.”
He still won't play this year but should be back and healthy for the Australian Open which he would not have done if he underwent surgery.
