Stefanos Tsitsipas' first round match against
Andy Murray at the
US Open on Monday, numerous fans and tennis pundits have all given their opinion on the Greek's antics during the match.
Tsitsipas took an extended bathroom break in the fourth set, as Murray was gaining momentum and mounting a comeback. This led many to believe the World No.3 was employing gamesmanship, in an attempt to break frustrate Murray and break his concentration.
After several players, spearheaded by Murray himself, accused Tsitsipas of using unethical tactics, the Greek finally broke his silence and responded on the issue.
“I don’t think I broke any rules. I played by the guidelines, how everything is," said Tsitsipas. "I don’t know how my opponent feels when I’m out there playing the match. It’s not really my priority.
“If there’s something that he has to tell me, we should speak. The two of us, to kind of understand what went wrong."
Although there is no set time for a player to return to the court during a bathroom break, the third seed took eight minutes to do his business and change his kit. Therefore, Tsitsipas did not break any rules as outlined by the ATP. Nonetheless, the overall consensus is that taking too long off-court goes against the spirit of the sport.
However, the third seed has a different opinion, stating that he did nothing wrong.
"As far as I’m playing by the rules and sticking to what the ATP says is fair, then the rest is fine," added Tsitsipas. "I have nothing against him (Murray). Absolutely nothing.”
