Although Taylor Fritz has been playing the best tennis of his career in recent months, he continues to fall short of Grand Slam glory. The American runs into a roadblock each time he faces top ATP stars Carlos Alcaraz or Jannik Sinner, but recently admitted to closing the gap on the duo.
Fritz currently sits at a career-high ranking of World No.4, backed by strong performances on tour. The California native reached his maiden Grand Slam final at last year's US Open, but fell to Sinner in straight sets.
The American has been impressive on tour this year, as he's won two ATP titles, at Eastbourne and Stuttgart. However, Fritz has been unable to solve the Alcaraz or Sinner riddle, which has prevented him from taking the next step at Grand Slams.
With Fritz competing at the Six Kings Slam in Saudi Arabia, he will likely have to face at least one of his two rivals if he hopes to win the exhibition tournament. The 27-year old believes he is getting closer to defeating the duo, and feels more confident following his win over Alcaraz at last month's Laver Cup event.

Defeating a top player can boost one's confidence to do it again, says Fritz

In an interview ahead of the Six Kings Slam, Fritz admitted to feeling outclassed by Alcaraz each time they met last season. However, his confidence took a major spike after he defeated the Spaniard at the annual Laver Cup this year.
"Whether it is beating somebody or get to a certain point in a tournament, when you do something once, it feels a lot easier to do again and again," began Fritz. It definitely helps (to get the win against Alcaraz). I played a great match and it gives me a clear outline, I guess, of what I need to do and what I can do to make it work.
"They are two incredible players (Sinner and Alcaraz). They push me to keep improving and become a better player to try and compete with them. When I played Carlos at the Laver Cup in the previous year, he played well and just felt like there was nothing I could do. I had no chance.
"This year at the Laver Cup and in the finals in Tokyo (where Fritz lost in straight sets), I felt like the level was much closer and I feel like I have got a lot closer."
