Andy
Roddick mocked a supporter of Donald Trump and recalled his 2009
Wimbledon
final against
Roger Federer.
Former
United States President Donald Trump ran for a consecutive second term in the
2020 presidential elections. Following his loss to Joe Biden, the billionaire
and his followers contested the defeat, claiming manipulation of the results.
After the
loss, Trump has also been held accountable for inciting the Capitol riot in
January 2021, in an attempt to dispute the election outcome.
Enter John
Eastman, a legal figure closely associated with Trump, who rekindled doubts
about the 2020 election results during a recent television appearance, which
caught the attention of
Andy Roddick on social media.
"I
have issues [with] the [2009] Wimbledon final. The largest one being that I
lost..." Andy Roddick wrote on his Twitter.
That
encounter was an epic final where Roger Federer clinched the match with a score
of 5-7, 7-6(7), 7-6(5), 3-6, 16-14.
The Swiss
player's victory secured his sixth Wimbledon title and 15th Grand Slam,
surpassing Pete Sampras' record of 14 major titles. Roddick claimed his lone
Grand Slam at the 2003 US Open and reached four other finals: one at the 2006
US Open and three at Wimbledon in 2004, 2005, and 2009.
After his
final Grand Slam showdown against Federer, Roddick addressed the spectators,
stating:
"I'm
one of the lucky few that gets cheered for, so thank you (to fans) for that, I
appreciate it. And I wanna say congratulations to Roger... He's a true champion
and he deserves everything he gets so... Well done, mate!"
Federer and
Roddick faced each other 24 times, with Federer being at the peak of his game
and dominating the ATP tour. He emerged victorious in 21 of those encounters,
leaving only three wins for the American former world No. 1.
