ATP stars from
Carlos Alcaraz to
Holger Rune showed mixed reactions to being asked to sing the Canadian national anthem as they prepared to play in the National Bank
Canadian Open in Toronto.
The opening round of the ATP 1000 event is well underway, as players such as
Matteo Berrettini and
Milos Raonic progress through to the second round. Perhaps the biggest name in men's singles to have been defeated thus far is world No. 10
Frances Tiafoe, who lost to Raonic.
However, beyond the tennis itself, the tournament has been finding inventive ways to engage viewers on social media and has now found a fun way to promote a part of Canadian culture with their recent video posted online, showing several ATP players singing the Canadian national anthem.
Players have mixed reactions to singing
The video, posted by the National Bank Open account on X, formerly known as Twitter, begins with clips of several players reacting to being told to sing.
Berrettini puts his head down and says 'I'm so shy', whilst Rune is heard declaring 'This is so awkward' as he covers his face with his hands. Meanwhile, American player Tiafoe is seen awkwardly laughing while muttering 'Canadians, bro', and even Raonic, a Canadian, had to ask about 'the rhythm' of the anthem before starting to sing.
However, after seeing the hilarious reactions of some players, the video then cuts to a clip of world No. 1 Alcaraz singing the opening lines of the anthem with a big smile on his face.
Several players then follow, including Canadian players Felix Auger-Aliassime and Gabriel Diallo, as well as Norway's Casper Ruud and Greece's
Stefanos Tsitsipas. Finally, the video ends with Canadians Vasek Popisil and Alexis Galarneau closing out the song.
Fans react on social media
The original post jokingly takes a dig at the players' singing abilities, with the caption:
"It sounds like these players picked the right career," followed by a microphone and a laughing emoji.
Indeed, many fans saw the funny side of the video, with one writing 'Amazing', whilst another commented with a laughing face and several applause emojis.
However, some fans were not so thrilled by the video, with one writing:
"Oy, being a tennis player in the social media age. I really have sympathy for the things they are asked—and told—to do by TPTB. Can’t they just play tennis?"
Meanwhile, some were busy sticking up for the vocal talents of their favourites.
"Stef[anos Tsitsipas] was actually quite good," one wrote, whilst another noted that "Matteo [Berrettini] can hold a tune."
