A confused Juan Martin del Potro got a plethora of bizarre messages a few days ago surrounding his personal life after several fans congratulated on him becoming a dad. The Argentine swiftly denied the rumours on social media, laughing it off.
The 2009 US Open has enjoyed his time outside of tennis since retiring back in 2022, last stepping out on court in an exhibition match in 2024 with 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic. Since then he has had his contributions to the sport honoured after he was announced as a nomination to be in the International Tennis Hall of Fame.
However, these accolades do not stop him from being on the wrong end of some false rumours sometimes being spreaded, with the latest one coming out about him becoming a dad for the first time. Del Potro has never married, and does not have any kids, meaning this would be significant news for the 37-year-old, and explains why so many people were eagerly messaging their congrats to him.
Del Porto had to clear the air, with him clearing up the rumours on X, as he wrote: “Today I woke up to several messages congratulating me because I was going to be a dad. I tell you that the news is totally FALSE!!! I don't even know that person either, haha. Greetings to everyone and thanks anyway for the good wishes.”

Life after tennis

These sorts of stuff are bound to occur when you are as big of a name as del Potro is. Along with his sole Grand Slam triumph in New York, the Argentine has collected 22 ATP titles, as well as winning two Olympic medals, bronze in London before heartbreakingly losing out to the reigning Olympic champion Andy Murray in a gruelling matchup in Brazil. That same year, del Potro brought more delight to his country after leading them to Davis Cup triumph, the countries maiden triumph in their fifth final.
Unfortunately, injuries halted del Potro's progress in the sport, missing large chunks of campaigns due to consistent setbacks and new problems emerging. Despite all of this, he managed to spark a mini-resurgence in 2017 and 2018, reaching two Grand Slam semi-finals along with a second major final in the US Open, but ultimately succumbing to Novak Djokovic. He would compete in just one more major, before officially retiring after a failed comeback after more injury woes. His last match on court would be in Buenos Aires against Djokovic in an exhibition played in front of 15,000 eagerly anticipated spectators, who would see their player defeat Djokovic in straight sets.

However, the pain of those injury setbacks still haunt him, and not just theoretically. back in 2024, he disclosed that he wakes up in pain everyday due to multiple surgeries involving his wrist and knee. Simple daily tasks are made harder due to what he put himself through on the court.
Into the current day, and he resides in Boynton Beach, Florida, where he is still immersed in tennis. Here, he coaches the next generation, passing down the knowledge and wisdom of a former Grand Slam champion. “Being a coach really excites me, for kids and people from all walks of life,” he said in an interview with Olympics.com back in May.
