Andy Murray lost an epic match to
Stefanos Tsitsipas at the
US Open and the British player simply could no get over 'the toilet break'.
Stefanos Tsitsipas is starting to make a habit of taking prolongued toilet breaks and several players are taking an exception to it. Most notably it's Andy Murray whose rhytm was completely shattered by the prolongued break. Murray is adamanat it costed him the match and
Dominic Thiem can understand Murray's stance expressing:
“First of all, it was a hell of a match. Great for tennis. It’s also nice that things are heating up from time to time. But I saw most of the match and can totally understand Andy
(Murray). But my point of view is that, especially with the conditions
of New York, you need to go out in a five-setter at least twice because
you just need to change your pants."
It's a statement that backs both players in a way as Thiem a contemporary of both understands best what it is to play in conditions like those. He further added:
“There’s no way around that, especially if you sweat that much. But there should be a time limit to that because if you go out to change all your clothes, it doesn’t take long, three or four minutes, maximum five, so there should be a time limit on that.”
Thiem was also sympathetic to Murray's rant at the press conference admitting that Murray is right:
“I heard Andy’s press conference and he was right. It just cools down your body and you are getting stiff and it is not easy at all.”
The issue is a polarizing won with many prominent tennis voices speaking on the matter. So far the ATP has not commented on it as it's within the rules as Mats Wilander said.
