While
Jannik Sinner admitted to not hunting down the World No.1 spot, he could edge further forward to a career high World No.3 ranking in the coming weeks if he doesn't withdraw from a tournament that his rival already has.
On the back of winning the Australian Open, Sinner who is currently World No.4 has closed the gap to his fellow finalist,
Daniil Medvedev with World No.1 Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz way in front. Sinner has dropped 240 points from not defending his Open Sud de France title, he is now on 8,070 points effectively which is 695 behind Medvedev.
However, Medvedev withdrew from the defence of his Rotterdam Open title and is still recovering from his efforts at the Australian Open. Sinner is still signed up to play and will be the top name if he decides to play the ATP 500. But the caveat is that Medvedev will drop 500 points, while Sinner will drop 300 points. That puts Sinner 495 points behind Medvedev and if he wins the title in Rotterdam, he would usurp the Russian ahead of the Middle Eastern portion of the season.
Medvedev also has final to defend from Indian Wells so even if it is not achieved in the next few weeks, it will likely be so by March. Alcaraz will also defend the 1,000 points from that tournament meaning an assault on the World No.2 with a flawless run could happen. Not out of the realms of possibility that he could be challenging Novak Djokovic before the end of the season.
Medvedev also has points to defend from the Qatar Open and Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships so without returning to title winning form, he will fall to Sinner eventually down the road. Interesting times ahead.
