Jannik
Sinner began his campaign at
Indian Wells with an easy victory against Thanasi
Kokkinakis (6-3, 6-0) and extended his winning streak to 16 consecutive
victories in 2024, although he ruled out being "unbeatable."
The
22-year-old Italian is currently in the prime of his career, having clinched
titles at the Australian Open and Rotterdam Open this year, making him one of
the seven active players who have won 16 consecutive matches. Sinner is also
ranked second in the live rankings and could potentially leave the tournament
as the world No. 2 if he at least reaches the same round as Carlos Alcaraz.
Despite his
outstanding current form, Sinner mentioned after his match with Kokkinakis that
he doesn't consider himself an invincible player but rather someone who
prepares well for the matches he plays: "No, I'm not unbeatable. I'm just
well-prepared. You know, I worked really hard to be in this position,” he said.
“Obviously
it's a position where, you know, you dream of because, you know, winning a
Grand Slam, that's I think everyone's dream, but in the other way, you know,
you travel here, the conditions are different and then you have to find a way
somehow," the world No. 3 added.
"We
came here earlier trying to prepare it. I felt better day after day. As we saw
today it can be breezy, and then it stops. You know, you have to be very, yeah,
you have to see the situation and then trying to be ready."
The Italian
will play the second round at the Tennis Paradise against the German 25th seed
Jan-Lennard Struff on Sunday, March 10th. Sinner will also compete in the
doubles main draw alongside his compatriot
Lorenzo Sonego, and they will make
their debut against the Russian pair of
Andrey Rublev and
Karen Khachanov.
