Jannik Sinner will turn towards the famed Juventus medical centre to perform a miracle ahead of Roland Garros in the weeks before the next Grand Slam as he faces a race against time to be fit for the French Open.
Sinner is struggling with a hip injury that saw him withdraw from his Madrid Open quarter-final clash against Felix Auger-Aliassime last week. Initially the thought was that it is just a niggle, but he has since withdrawn from the Rome Open and in a press conference prior he said that he wasn't sure he would play in Paris.
“I will only go to Paris if I am one hundred per cent physically because I don’t want to shorten my career just to do one more tournament," said Sinner taking a pragmatic view of the situation to Italian media. But if this is the case, he is still trying to make it. He has turned to the state of the art facility offering diagnosis, specialist medical treatment , rehabilitation and sports medicine. Previously helping Matteo Berrettini for instance, he will hope to make a quicker comeback than planned if the injury isn't too severe.
From being lauded as the best player in the world to being a doubt for the next Grand Slam, the race against time begins now for Sinner. “The next few days will be decisive as to whether the world No 2 will decide to leave for Paris. If the treatment has the desired effect, Sinner might decide to fly to France in a couple of weeks and give it a try," said a report by Gazzetta dello Sport describing the situation.
They added: “Hip injury requires rehabilitation in water, so as not to overload the joint, and a gym to do the exercises and keep fit”.
