Jannik Sinner is the new World No.1 in the ATP Rankings and will be thus from Monday onwards no matter what happens going forward at the 2024 French Open after a sudden withdrawal for Novak Djokovic.

Sinner is currently as of time of writing two sets up on Grigor Dimitrov in their Quarter-Final tie. But he will soon find out afterwards that he is the new World No.1. This in a procession that in reality has been a long time coming for the Italian.

With his recent injury which saw him withdraw from the latter stages of Madrid, he couldn't court his likely procession to the top of the rankings in Rome which was the likely setup and in fact had to wait for a do better or bust scenario at Roland Garros.

Djokovic drops 1,600 points as a result of withdrawing from his Quarter-Final with Casper Ruud which was set for Wednesday. He has suffered a meniscus tear and his ranking could fall more if he can't play Wimbledon with the Serbian reaching the final last year. Sinner has a less complimentary grass record so in reality will only build on this lead in what is an anointing for a star who a year ago wouldn't have dreamt of ascending the top of the rankings.

Since he was ironically sick in a bin during Beijing last November, he has grown from strength to strength unlike his immune system in China. But he has become Australian Open champion and alongside Carlos Alcaraz has finally started to show the hype is real. Now he ascends to the top of the sport and with him being currently on the court against Dimitrov, he won't know anything about it.

Whether a ceremony is being prepared remains to be seen and Sinner no doubt won't want to celebrate too much due to Djokovic's injury. But it is the crowning of a new World Number One after a record three-year reign from the Serbian kingpin who has done it whilst playing a fairly limited schedule showing his prowess which seems to have waned slightly in recent months.
