Emotions were high at the 2025
Stockholm Open on Monday, when Leo Borg, son of tennis legend
Bjorn Borg, won his second career main draw ATP match to advance to the second round at his home event.
The 22-year old was granted a wild card entry to the event, where he faced Austrian Sebastian Ofner in the opening round. Ranked at World No.633, Borg stunned the crowd on Center Court to upset the former World No.37, recording a 6-3 6-4 victory much to the delight of the partisan crowd.
Borg played some of the best tennis of his career on Monday, converting two of his three break point opportunities to secure his victory. The young Swedish required an hour and 16 minutes to advance to the next round, dropping to the ground in disbelief at the conclusion of the match.
This was Borg's first victory against a Top 150 opponent in nine attempts. The Swede has been a staple on the ITF circuit, where he hopes to climb back up the rankings in an attempt to surpass his previous career high of World No.334.
Borg admits to lacking consistency in key moments
Following his victory, Borg was ecstatic yet brutally honest during his emotional post-match interview.
"This is really special. My first Stockholm win is so special,” said Borg. “I really stepped up my game, so I’m really happy with my performance. I have the level, but the consistency has not been my greatest side. I’ve really worked on my stuff, and I really stepped up today and showed myself, and the tennis people, that I really belong here.
“I’ve been injured for some time and how I managed today to come back and show myself that I really belong here. It’s a good, positive thing. I just have to keep doing my thing."
The Stockholm native will face third seed
Denis Shapovalov in the second round. Nonetheless, Borg remained pleased with his performance, citing his self-belief as the main reason he was able to pull through.
"I played really good today and it helped so much with this crowd, it was amazing," he continued. "I knew he had a big game, so I really had to play much better. But I really stepped up today and am really happy with my performance. Yeah, really good."
