Former world number one Spain’s Feliciano Lopez believes that
Switzerland’s legendary tennis player
Roger Federer dominated the circuit
because of his ‘beast mentality’.
The 41-year-old is rated amongst the very best in the history
of men’s singles tennis in the Open era.
Lopez was quoted in a report where he heaped praise on the
mentality of the former world number one.
“He [Federer] usually imposed himself by his quality as a
tennis player,” said Lopez. “Mentally, he was very strong, a beast. The three,
even the four because I include [Andy] Murray, are mentally at a different
level. Federer imposed his dominance on the court because tennis-wise he
overwhelmed you.
“He was so good that you could not play at the pace you
wanted. A different ball speed, a beastly rhythm and intensity of play. Each
with their own particularities, it was very difficult to face them. There was
nothing apart that made you suffer against him. His tennis was enough for him.”
Federer announced his retirement from tennis in September
2022 after dealing with multiple injuries in the last few years of his career
at the highest level.
Despite not having such a great ending, he will remain in
the history books of the sport for his on-court achievements.
Federer became the first player ever to win more than 15
Grand Slam titles in the Open era. Later, he also went on to become the first
player in the history of sport in the men’s singles category to lift 20 Grand
Slam titles.
