As American tennis dynamo Ben Shelton continues to impress at the 2025 Australian Open, retired compatriot Mardy Fish believes the youngster has the potential to win several Grand Slam titles.
Shelton defeated Italian Lorenzo Sonego to reach his maiden Australian Open semifinal, and is set to take on defending champion Jannik Sinner for a spot in his first Major final. The American, seeded 21st in Melbourne, has thrilled the local crowd with his attacking style of tennis, with some believing he could pull off an upset against the World No.1.
The former Olympic silver medalist was one of several who has been impressed by Shelton this season. Fish took to social media to praise his younger countryman, and stated he believes Shelton will end up with a couple of Grand Slam titles before his career is over.
"Ben Shelton is an absolute dawg. Monster game,” wrote Fish on Twitter. “Shows up on the biggest stages. I think he wins multiple Slams.”
Shelton trails Sinner 1-4 in career meetings on the ATP tour, and has lost his last four matches against the Italian. Nonetheless, the Atlanta native is seeking to become the first American man to win a Grand Slam singles title since former World No.1 Andy Roddick won the US Open in 2003.
Prior to this year's Australian Open semifinal appearance, Shelton's best result at a Grand Slam was when he reached the semifinals at the 2023 US Open, where he fell to Novak Djokovic.
