Last year's Australian Open saw Andy Murray as one of the real stories of the tournament with his constant epic battles, but this year has been a damp squib in comparison as he was well beaten in the opening round 4-6, 2-6, 2-6 by 30th seed Tomas Martin Etcheverry.
Fans flocked to the stadium to see Murray with reports of too many people queuing to get in for the multiple Grand Slam champion. But they did not get their wish of a Murray win as his recent poor form continued in Melbourne.
Heading into the first Grand Slam of 2024, Murray was defeated by Grigor Dimitrov in Brisbane after initially leading the tie. He won one and lost one in Kooyong, but it didn't prove a good omen as he was easily beaten in the first set 6-4.
His serving was below par throughout the tie and his struggles continued as he couldn't find another gear and lost the second set even more comprehensively 6-2. No break point chances could be crafted as he lost by the same scoreline again. Etcheverry after a fairly even start to the tie sealed two breaks at pivotal moments to go 3-2 and 5-2 up to head towards the victory and after easily holding his serve throughout the tie, he did so one more time for the win.
After previous gruelling battles with Etcheverry, many would've been expecting the same but it went down like a lead balloon in the case of Murray. Gael Monfils or Yannick Hanfmann now await for Etcheverry with the lure of Novak Djokovic in the third round initially for Murray not proving to be the tonic that was needed as he now heads back to the drawing board desperately searching for answers again.
